It served me well in troubleshooting mostly basic automotive stuff, but it finally gave up the ghost recently when the batteries leaked out their contents and severely corroded the terminals.
I cleaned them up and put in new batteries, but the readings were erratic and I couldn't trust them.
Since I'm doing better financially now, I decided to get the Fluke.
You can tell that the quality is much better right off the hop.
Everything just works more smoothly, it's easier to read the LED display, and given what I've seen online showing Fluke's internals, I know I'm getting something that is used reliably by professionals, and that I can myself know for certain that the readings I'm seeing are the actual numbers, not ones I need to be second-guessing.
I need something that's not going to fail me in these situations.
Not only that, but the old meter I had was giving me fits on an overcharging alternator situation where the voltage was fluctuating at a rhythmic rate.
The refresh rate on this pricey meter was the thing that sold me on the idea of getting it at this point in time.
I wasn't sure of my readings, and this one didn't sweat the situation at all.
I knew exactly what I was looking and and I'm confident in the numbers that I was seeing.
I was able to clearly see the alternator overcharging rhythmically and that it was in need of service.
Now, why did I knock one star off you ask?
It's because of the dial.
With a simple tool this expensive, I want something that just works in every way.
While I was using this tool for household wiring, I couldn't get it to read even though I was suspicious the wire was hot in spite of the breaker being off on another circuit in the room, and this could have potentially lead to me being electrocuted, because that outlet was indeed hot at the time.
Turns out that the dial was between detents and there was no indication of this on the meter.
The detents aren't particularly positive, and it was just showing zero when I hooked it to the hot 110 outlet leads.
Luckily my spidy sense kicked in and I checked over the meter to make sure it was in good working order before grabbing hold of a hot lead, a little wiggle and she worked just fine.
That scared me a little though.
I never had that problem with my cheap meter, and again, I need to rely on it in these situations.
Now that I know of this problem, I'll work around it to ensure my safety, but come on Fluke.
You can do better on those detents, or maybe you could design some firmware that would detect when the dial is between detents and cause it to send up a warning when it's between them and therefore not functioning properly.

PROS: - The dual, plastic coated magnet on the back is very useful.
I can stick it to the face of one of my vintage HAM radios while I'm doing some testing and it will stay there.
I haven't tested the Duty Cycle or Temperature functions.
I have yet to use it to measure the 900VDC plate voltage on one of my Swan 700CX tube transceivers, because I want to get some use out of the meter first before I risk blowing it up.
Plus, I plan to use this primarily for testing circuits in cars, and solid-state HAM radios.
I had a UEI 384 that claimed a max DC voltage rating of 1000 volts, but when I tested the Swan plate voltage at rest, no modulation the UEI blew up - literally.
I found another one online for 20 bucks used, and tried it again.
THAT meter also blew up.
So I tend to take the voltage ratings on these cheap meters with several grains of salt.
But the one I'm testing has measured up to 2200uF with good accuracy.
Perhaps they meant 600uF within the stated accuracy.
NOTE: I'VE CORRECTED MY RATING based on the fact that this meter is rated at 60,000 uF.
The largest value I have right now if 20,000, and this meter reads it with the same approximate accuracy as my much more expensive Amprobe AM-570, and my CEM DT-9935 LCR.
CONS: - That magnet that I mentioned above can pick up nuts, staples, pins, and other stuff, so it's a bit of a double-edge sword.
Apparently, when engineering told marketing that it would read to 16MHz, marketing thought they said 60.
And, the voltage required to obtain a reading is fairly high, almost 5V P-P.
The Amprobe AM-570 on the other hand reads accurately up to 43MHz, and it only needs a little over 1V P-P for a good reading.
Note: I just checked my Amprobe manual, and it claims to read to 60 MHz also.
I have a feeling that this is just a theoretical figure, based on the fact that these are 6000-count 5999, really meters.
And for some reason, the multi-function test adapter is arranged C-B-E instead of B-C-E, making testing TO-220 devices a hassle.
So, DON'T buy this as a transistor tester.

It beeps VERY loud a very strong 2khz square wave beep for every little thing, changing modes, a button press, it's really annoying.
There's no option to disable it that I can find.
I opened the unit and removed the piezo unit so it will never beep again.
Other residents complained from hearing it while in my indoor workshop on a separate floor.
The beep issue loses a star.
Now that I have gotten past all of that beeping nonsense.
It does suck a little that I had to remove the piezo unit, since I like watching what I'm doing for certain precision continuity tests.
SELLER take note: As we spoke in our email, I don't believe anyone has a use for the beeping beyond continuity testing for this unit The delta function works as expected, but only on a linear basis, obviously, so keep that in mind while testing.
The back-light stays on for about 12 seconds.
I might rewire mind to stay on while the unit is on, and I may convert the unit to rechargeable Li-Ion too.
The included probes aren't THAT great.
I'm not sure what it is lately, but every new probe I have bought from discount retailers has a different plating than my older probes, and it makes contact difficult.
I had to scratch-in my probes to get a few impedance measurements, or give them some high pressure to get a reading.
I replaced them for further testing with high-quality cat IV 1000V probes.
The magnet is just two rare earth magnets in the strap part, and one steel washer on the body inside of the DMM.
It's ok, not terribly strong.
I would absolutely NOT use that to hold the unit over a running engine or something equally critical; it does not take much of a yank to pull it down on accident.
For a stable environment, on an iron object, it may work well.
I prefer to be vigilant about possible problems, that's all.
However, the slot on the DMM could be used with a ty-wrap or other reliable strapping for a more secure hold for sure, it's solid polymer.
The lowest range measurements are within the specifications given for the most part.
The motherboard of this unit is a general unit, it is not purpose built.
The motherboard is the same as a number of other low-cost multimeters, including those with different micro-controllers, USB functionality, and some others.
I may modify a handful of the hardware on this unit, just to see if it's capable of extended operational features.
Capacitance testing is limited, but it works.
Voltage testing is well within spec, current measurement is within spec, impedance seems OK, but the issue persists with the given probes as mentioned above, so some erroneous reporting is present without really forcing good contact.
It's annoying, but it works.
My other units use a different Vce value too, so that's something to get used to for bench testing.
Also, I will probably lose the testing bud.
I don't think there is a reason to make those units external and removable.
One advantage, the bud can be used with diodes, so you aren't fumbling with remarkable, mister money usa cedar rapids ia think leads to check diode forward voltage.
Frequency test seems to be on target with a square wave generator tested at 1khzand reads 2% off target on my power filter, which is properly calibrated to laboratory specifications, at 59.
Not a big deal, just an observation.
I think this is still within spec out of the manual.
Auto power off function cannot be disabled without modifying the unit, so what's the point of having an LCD symbol?
This lead me to believe it could be disabled.
Now for the most important part of all, the safety stuff.
The fuses are proper for the given category of application.
DMM case is well isolated and insulated.
I am comfortable using this on single phase 220 and 110, and just about anything lower voltage.
