Hogarth's "Princes' Game" series is peculiar and compelling and peculiarly compelling space opera.
None of their number have been successful at taking that brutal empire to task for their violations of the treaty.
None have survived the vicious court of a race of winged shapechangers, one maintained by cruelty, savagery and torture.
Lisinthir Nase Galare is the Alliance's thirteenth emissary.
A duelist, an esper book of ra game a prince of his people, he has been sent to bring an empire to heel.
Will it destroy him, as it has his predecessors?
Or can one man teach an empire to fear.

Her writing is skillful and entertaining and the setting is interesting.
I give this one three stars because it's well done and there's an up-front warning that the book may be disturbing, but even so, I put it down because I just couldn't stomach any more of it.
The hero is an Eldrich think space elf sent as an ambassador to the court of an alien race so hostile that the last twelve came back in disgrace, straitjackets, or boxes.
We're quickly shown that the aliens' political system centers around slavery, rape, torture and so on, with constant intrigue.
As usual there's some interesting world-building, including the hero's native language which is pretty much made for elaborate diplomatic insults, and plenty of tension.
Unfortunately, I felt that the brutality had become the focus of the story, described in detail, until I put the book down.
Showing us the nasty court environment and telling us that the hero's been put into a repulsive situation to get anything done diplomatically is one thing.
Showing entire scenes about exactly how so-and-so intends to rape him this week is another.
I figured it was going to get even more degrading as things went on.
I've known of this book for several years but never read it, because I lean towards genteel, fluffy fantasies and this is a story full of sexual violence and torture.
But recently, I've been in the mood for something dark and intimate, and with the third book in this series just out, I figured I would finally give it a try.
Rather to my surprise, I loved the book.
It has some weaknesses: the plot hinges on diplomacy between two interstellar nations, the Alliance and the Empire, and the complexity of politics on that massive scale is glossed over.
The backdrop of nations feels more like a painted image than a living thing that twists, turns, and wreaks havoc behind the scenes.
Further, there were points where I wanted the characters to succeed by brilliance read more instead the results felt more like chance.
This aside, the story has the prince games book lot to recommend it.
Lisinthir is delightful, especially in the first half of the book, where his wit, courage, and insight all shine.
Watching the Slave The prince games book evolve over the course of the narrative is remarkable, and the way the two characters rely on each other's strengths is the prince games book />I especially liked that the Slave Queen's ability to simply endure, which looks like helplessness, was in its own way a power.
I'd expected to have my suspension of disbelief tested by the set-up: The Alliance and the Empire are described as "allies", but the Empire openly enslaves, tortures, and rapes Alliance citizens at their court: nothing even a little covert or deniable about it.
But it hangs together well as states attempting detente rather than actual allies.
The Alliance doesn't want to start a war unless they have to, and they're not sure they'll win if they do.
So they are tolerating things that one wouldn't expect, say, the modern USA to tolerate.
The Empire is technologically sophisticated yet their court does free alchemist book consider the use of any weapon that's not innate; this makes sense as part of their culture and the entire heirarchy on which it's based.
It's not obvious how they became an advanced society while retaining a horrific feudal culture that seems more likely to stifle innovation, but there are hints that suggest possibilities.
The book's core strength is in its portrayal of the relationships between the main characters and the complexity of their emotions.
The story navigates a whole range of emotional states: fear, pain, horror, pleasure, love, the prince games book, anger, hope, despair, and more.
These are powerfully, at times overwhelmingly, depicted.
The transformations of all the characters -- and everyone is strikingly transformed before the end -- are difficult and plausibly conveyed.
It is an intimate, personal story.
The book is full of depictions of rape, sexual violence, misogyny oh the MISOGYNYdominance contests, humiliation, drug abuse, etc.
None of this is written for titillation: it is not a remotely erotic novel.
There's a certain fascination with the power exchange involved, with the emotional response of characters to all this horror.
That gets a fair amount of loving detail.
Most of the abuse itself is dealt with in few words and not explicitly described.
I found the work as a whole compelling and engaging, the kind of story that devastates in the best possible way, and that uplifts by the end.
This is a beautiful, if difficult, book.
Hogarth's introduction makes it clear that there will be violence, sexual assault, and other troubling themes in it, and that's absolutely true; if those things are likely to be a turn-off, this may not be the book for you.
But I will say that I am someone who isn't a fan of books with rape narratives, or set in bleak or 'grimdark' worlds, and yet this worked for me.
It is a book with rape in it, yes; it is a book set in a brutal and violent world, yes; but what redeems the book for me is a sense of hope and redemption.
Even the Wingless--and the books that follow it--are often dark and often desperate, but they are not, in the end, despairing.
Even the Wingless follows the story of Lisinthir, who is for lack of a better word a psychic space elf who is ambassador to the Chatcaava, a draconic race who are aggressive and borderline sociopathic.
The Alliance that sent Lisinithir to the Chatcaava failed in their prior few ambassadors because they were, frankly, diplomats who were too diplomatic; the prince games book had no conception how to deal with a species that negotiated terms through violence sexual and otherwise.
Lisinthir, though an ethical man, learned to navigate that society--changing himself, but, more importantly, changing and Changing, through the Chatcaavans' long-ignored but innate ability to shapechange the people around him.
Even the The prince games book is a love story, though a difficult one.
It's painful, but beautiful.
And it is the doorway into a series of books about war, transformation, despair, glory, and hope.
